The Whimsical Paintings of Musician-Artist JNGL

JNGL (pronounced ‘jungle’) has given us some great, fun paintings to share April 20th at the opening of Hello World, an amazing show that is being lovingly brewed by urban art curator Luna George. With roots in graffiti and tattooing, Costa Rican born / Miami raised painter, JNGL brings multiple influences from cartoons, video games, societal issues, life, death and nature into his paintings with a goal for constant expression.

The talented painter is also a DJ, which he claims as a major source of inspiration for his visual work. “I believe that music and art go hand in hand, like left and right. One inspires the other, they constantly revolve around each other, music inspires art- art inspires music.”

Maybe you’ll be inspired by his whimsical paintings this Saturday. Come and see for yourself!

Big shout out to Dave MacDowell who is currently painting his very first mural EVER, at The Service Station, to be unveiled at the opening.  From what I hear, neighbors been shouting out their windows about how beautiful it looks and how much they love it.  Wow what an impact art makes...it has the power to make people smile and so does the art of Dave Mac Dowell.

Hello World Features King Bee from Bronx, NY

Stemming from New York, the artwork by The Royal "Kingbee" impressed curator, Luna George, and we are very proud to announce that Kingbee will have work on display for the Hello World exhibit opening on April 20, 2013 at The Service Station. 

Alfredo Bennett, professionally known as The Royal “Kingbee” is a New York City-based artist. He was born in Harlem NY and raised in the Bronx since the early 70’s. He began his illustrious career painting graffiti on walls until gathering recognition and eventually being commissioned to perform his artistic abilities for numerous businesses, public and private all throughout the city of New York. Some commissioned works being for Youngland clothing store, Bacardi Liquor, and Rite-aid just to name a few. Highly talented, respected, mysterious and probably the most underestimated underground artist of our time. KingBee is the Founder of UWLAW (Urban Writers Logos and Walls), one of the most talented graffiti crews in New York City throughout the 90’s. His skills are continually evolving in all art mediums and categories including body art, canvases, and logos. KingBee still continues to reside in the city that never sleeps, Bronx, NY. Here he still continues to draw inspiration from his surroundings, which happens to be one of the most vibrant cities in the world.

"My artwork is a blend of reality, fantasy and nostalgia. Most of my work falls under the category of painting and drawing, but I continue to explore the possibilities of creating work without adhering to these methods. My work is inspired by narrative, graffiti, Pop Art, Chicano Art, music, fashion, pop culture and spacial relations. I try to stay as honest as I can with my work.

Raul Gonzalez was born and raised in Houston, TX. His artistic influences came from pop culture, video games, Lowrider magazine and music videos. He began drawing at an early age and eventually took art classes in high school.

Gonzalez studied Graphic and Fine Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri for 2 years. At that time, Raul Gonzalez was certain of his career as an artist so he moved back to Houston and started working. Not finding a passion in any of the many jobs Raul worked, he decided to return to school part-time. In 2007 Raul transferred to the University of Houston to pursue a degree in Art Education.

After taking two courses (Color & Illustration) with David Hickman, Raul found a strong interest in painting. Raul graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and received Magna Cum Laude Honors. During the same month he graduated, Raul also became one of the founding members of the art collective, The Montrose Art Society, which is based in Houston, TX. Raul's work has been shown around Texas and he has gained collectors throughout the United States. He is currently studying Studio Art at The University of Texas in San Antonio, where he is pursuing his masters degree in both painting and sculpture.

We are very proud to announce that Raul Gonzalez will have several colorful pieces on display for the Hello World exhibition which opens April 20, 2013.  

Intricate Stencils, Impressive Style: Hello World Welcomes Dave Lowell

Sometimes the absolute skill involved in a piece of art work inspires such awe it helps us to remember why we love art in the first place. Dave Lowell's extremely intricate stencils and free-hand aerosol techniques are one example of art that gets us exhilarated.

With hard-to-match technical cuts and a direct, communicative style have brought Lowell's work to exhibit with legends of the street art genre and current leaders of the new contemporary movement. Hello World is proud to welcome Dave Lowell April 20th at The Service Station.

Exploring the Evolution: Enik One

We're having a great time exploring the evolution of street art through different styles, media and subject matter; through different artists and their stories... and we're so excited to share it with you April 20th at the opening of Hello World, a unique presentation of art and community envisioned by urban art curator, Luna George.

As the show takes shape, we're excited to share the work of EnikOne, a Southern California native who's unique body of work has matured into an amalgamation of graphic designs, mixing his street art, graffiti, typography, stencils, stickers, paste-ups, and silk screens into a style emblematic of the City of Quartz. With over two decades of perfecting these methods on the streets, EnikOne has earned the attention of national and international artists, earning prizes in Los Angeles, Portland, and Germany and has received invitations to show his work in Italy and South Africa among other international locations.

Armando Soria's Gonzo Hip Hop Surrealism

Armando Soria's intricate gonzo surrealism presents an alternate universe of undulating mindscapes that leaves the viewer slightly uncomfortable - as any good art should do. Incorporating elements of 90's hip hop graffiti with comic book influences and the tradition of surrealist painting, Soria infuses a stimulating new style that we're excited to share with you at the opening of Hello World April 20th.

Hailing from the San Fernando Valley (CA), Soria grew up watching his cousins write graffiti and discovered painting in college, where he studied graphic design as a career move, but fell in love with painting on a fluke in an elective class. Fascinated by surrealism, the nascent artist spent weeks on end with his nose in Salvador Dalí books, and remains hooked on the style today.

"Surrealism offers such freedom. You're not limited by anything, and you can just create without worrying about the set up, the composition, the subject, the background, the landscape. If you want to include something, you just find a way to work it in. It's so much freedom," says Soria.

Who is The Cat Cult?

Part of the experience of urban LA is the blur of colors and slogans and slurs shouting out at us from structures and walls in the form of graffiti, wheat pastes, signs and even sculpture as we whirl past in our cars, busy at life. And, from time to time, an iconic image begins to crystallize, borne of repetition, size and creative impact. And these iconic images, even neon cats, become embedded in our experience of our environment. Meow!

One creator of such public content is LA artist collective, The Cat Cult, presenting work at urban art curator, Luna George's Hello World, April 20th.

ARTIST BIO:


Cat Cult is a collective of artists who are based in Los Angeles, California. Its participants create work both individually and under the singular identity of Cat Cult, displaying work in galleries as well as on the streets. Cat Cult embraces a variety of mediums, including printmaking, illustration, photography, painting, sewing, and graphic design. From trickster characters to divining spiritual guides, cats have been used throughout history to represent important figures within ancient fables and myths in cultures and societies across the globe. Cat Cult embraces these multidimensional identities that the cat embodies and plays upon these iconic ideas in playful and ironic ways throughout the urban environment.

Living Life with No Regrets! Ben NAZ

We just received artwork for the Hello World art show from Ben NAZ of the UK, and the energy of having this in our hands right now is so overwhelming, we had to share it with you. This is a special moment for us as Ben is truly living his mantra of "Live Life with No Regrets" and continuing to create art and share his vision with the world while undergoing an extremely tough battle with cancer.

Including Ben NAZ's work is especially close to our hearts, because our own curator, Luna George, has just overcome the same battle and emerged to share her own vision of art and community with the world. "I feel a special connection with Ben and his work, because in the last year, it was almost like we were cancer buddies together, providing support for each other in a really difficult time. It is unbelievable how hard it is to continue to create and stay connected when you feel so sick. I am so humbled and honored to have Ben's work in the show, and it feels amazing to hold it in my hands right now. I can't wait to share it with you."

FULL ARTIST BIO:

Ben NAZ is a Filipino-French street artist and one of the most recognized street artists in the Philippines. Born in Strasbourg, France in the late 70’s by a Filipino father and a French mother, Ben NAZ migrated back to the Philippines on the early 80’s during the heavy political outcry there.

Branded as "Manilla's Finest," Ben NAZ's dramatic, political scenes and heart breaking stencil works captured attention almost immediately. Depicting a struggle between the rich and the poor, deep-rooted and emotional images characterize eye-opening scenery to the people of the Philippines.

Ben NAZ was instrumental in getting the political message out in Manila at a time when all street art was considered propaganda by the rightist/rebels, and when he left the Philippines and went back to Europe to continue his career as a guerrilla street artist, he started placing his works on the walls of London and Paris to showcase the real political outcry of the Filipino people.

Fiber Fresh and Yu Cotton-Well

Hello World explores a vast array of talent including that of fiber artists.  From cross stitching, crocheting, embroidery, knitting and more...fiber artists in this show are edgy, fun and full of passion for their craft.  

Yu Cotton-well, a Hello World exhibiting artist, uses fiber as her main medium and often blends it with ordinary objects to connect the relationship between her personal life and her artwork, and also to appeal the audience with a message which is always hidden under anyone's everyday life. Her subject matters often deal with social, political, and cultural issues, but from a domestic perspective, which makes it easier for the audiences to understand and relate them to their own personal experiences. Cotton-well wishes to capture those moments in life where we pause and look inward to reflect our home, root, and even a scent from our childhood because she strongly believes that being aware of our root is an indispensable element for us to make a change in the world that we live in.

Art Spotted: Ekose22

Last year Ekose22's artwork was spotted by curator, Luna George. "I was really blown away when I saw Eskose22's work.  I was like where have you been?" says Luna. Immediately Ekose22 became an artist Luna kept close, waiting for an opportunity to show his work to a wider audience. 

Now...after months passing, that opportunity is here and Ekose22's work will be on display during the upcoming exhibit "Hello World" curated by Luna George.  "I am so excited that this opportunity is finally here and I will be able to share this talent with others.  Ekose22's work is a must see and I hope that more people will enjoy his solid skill like I did the first time I laid eyes on it" Luna reports. 

Here is a look at the creative process of the making of "Visitors of the Iron Gallery" by Ekose22 which will be on display for the Hello World exhibit.

 

In the first stage, Ekose22 allows the piece to move around and come to life.

Characters, monsters and letters place themselves on the canvas.

 Every piece he creates always has a balance of some sort of positive and negative.

WIP by Inge Vandormael

Very very important, as curator of HELLO WORLD, to show everyone the progress shots of the work being created and shared by the exhibiting artists.  With that being said...special WIP by exhibiting artist Inge Vandormael and her awesome pen and ink work.  Can't wait to see her piece continue to come to life.

An Artist's Story by SEL

As a little boy I remember having these images in my head but I could never find them in any books or magazines so I would draw them. Dinosaurs fighting SWAT teams, spaceship race-cars , that kind of thing. I guess that's how I started drawing.

I was born and raised in West Los Angeles, California. It's a very diverse part of Los Angeles where I found myself surrounded by a wide range of cultures and scenes that have been a big influence in my work. Like a lot of kids the skateboard was often my mode of transportation but instead of learning new tricks I would have my board flipped over copying the cool graphics I found on the bottom. Being from the West Side the skate decks were usually Dog Town brandishing a Wes Humpston design. While at school instead of doing my assignments I would usually be sketching in class trading drawing techniques with the Cholos. I would teach them skulls and they would show me there lettering style.

In my early teens I got into the L.A. punk scene and would hand draw gig flyers, t-shirt and sticker designs for the local punk bands. Artists like Pushead, Shawn Kerri and RxCx (Ric Clayton) who did all of the art for the band Suicidal Tendencies where a big influence on me. I even drew a few custom Suicidal shirts for some of the local boys back in the day.

Entering high school I discovered the book Subway Art, a groundbreaking book documenting the work of New York graffiti writers. I was amazed by all the bold colors, line work and movement within the letters it had me mesmerized. Immediately I began working on my own lettering styles and characters, and eventually progressed to putting my outlines up on walls. Soon after I met other writers and went on to 
join the West Coast Artists (WCA) crew, one of the seminal graffiti crews in Los Angeles. The graffiti movement was just starting in L.A. and I had the honor of painting along side graffiti legends Rival, P-Jay, Miner, Risk, Pyro, and Wisk to name a few and have a few of my pieces in the book History of Los Angeles Graffiti.

From my early graffiti/street graphics roots I branched out into graphic design and art direction working with the music industry creating CD packaging, marketing materials and as of late designing platinum sales awards for artists Eminem, Nicki Minaj and the Foo Fighters.

Currently, I have been focusing on my personal art work using all the techniques, inspiration and lessons my life has taught me through the years. Good or bad it has all lead me this chapter in my life where I am today and I couldn't be happier.

I still see images in my head but now they are through the eyes of the grown man that learned to channel all that angst in a positive way.
